the future, already in progress...

Chinatown:
Jake Gittes: I just want to know what you're worth. Over ten million?
Noah Cross: Oh my, yes.
Jake Gittes: Why are you doing it? How much better can you eat? What can you buy that you can't already afford?
Noah Cross: The future, Mr. Gittes, the future.
The Graduate:
Mr. McGuire: I want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Benjamin Braddock: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Benjamin Braddock: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Plastics.
Benjamin Braddock: Just how do you mean that, sir?
Mr. McGuire: There's a great future in plastics. Think about it.

Have you ever seen into the future? Felt you had a sure feeling what awaits? Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had the Bajoran Prophets/Wormhole Aliens, characters that existed outside of time and space with no understanding of linear existance. Max Headroom lived a constant Twenty Minutes Into the Future. For me, it's always a fun exercise to imagine life not bound by the constraints of time. Humans are fascinated by the notion of knowing what waits ahead - if we could only get one-up on the future, think of all the things that could be accomplished.

Since there's no time machines, the closest we've come to a reliable portal to the future are Time Capsules. The idea goes all the way back to the earliest human civilizations in Mesopotamia, humankind started trying to span time since they were sucking the marrow out scavenged bones.

People want to know what awaits them so badly that many are willing to pay others to "read" their future. Now, if that's the case, for a small fee I'm available for consultations - I'm sure you'll find that my percentage of correct prognostications is equal or better to John Edward, internationally known author and television personality. Hell, I'll give you the first one for free - I predict that soon you're going to download some music and feel good while listening to it. How's that for starters?

"The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time." - Abraham Lincoln

"The future will soon be a thing of the past." - George Carlin

"In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." - Andy Warhol

"We know what we are, but know not what we may be." - William Shakespeare

"Fear not for the future, weep not for the past" - Percy Bysshe Shelley

"When all else is lost, the future still remains." - Christian Nestell Bovee

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt

"For the majority of us, the past is a regret, the future an experiment." - Mark Twain

"Stop acting as if life is a rehearsal. Live this day as if it were your last. The past is over and gone. The future is not guaranteed." - Wayne Dyer

"I never think of the future; it comes soon enough." - Albert Einstein

"Never make forecasts, especially about the future." - Samuel Goldwyn

"It is easy to see, hard to foresee." - Benjamin Franklin

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it." - Theodore Hook

"The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." - Paul Valery

"The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet." - William Gibson

We are livin' in the future
Tell you how I know
Read it in the paper
Fifteen years ago

We're all flyin' rocket ships
And talkin' with our minds
And wearin' turquoise jewelry
And standin' in soup lines

i love this post. shelley, the kinks and the velvet underground all in one place = perfection.
the best thing i learned so far in university is that there is no time other than the present. the past is your present memories, the future is your present hopes or expectations.

You have to live in the present unless you prefer not relating to the outside world, though quite a few people choose not to. Glad Uni is going well for you this year.

Is that a song about the future?

Mostly about sex, actually. It gets used in context with jet packs much in scifi, though.

I'm aware it's a remake of Plastic Bertrand's Ca Plane Pour Moi. I'm not sure if Bertrand was singing about getting head like Elton Motello was.

Different lyrics mostly, but a nice beat.

Jet packs are the future, though.

Hmmm, learned a few things I didn't know. Jet Boy, Jet Girl was actually the original version, I'd assumed otherwise. Also, the only French in the song is in the chorus - Ça Plane Pour Moi. The rest is just bastardized English. It reminds me of the magical Prisencolinensinainciusol by Adriano Celentano:

Oy, I had forgotten that. A cruel trick, convincing you to listen to the damn thing to figure out the lyrics that are really gibberish.

Now you now what I go through. Years of playing at extreme amplification and standing near drummers hit-hats and cymbals screwed up my hearing. I'm able to hear sounds fine, but I have trouble discerning talking, so often it sounds like people are mumbling. If I'm standing in front of a person, I can watch their lips and do okay, but the phone can be a nightmare.

I think I might be cheesy but the first unmentioned songs that came to mind...

Motion City Soundtrack - The Future Freaks Me Out:

rock the Haro sport
I rock the cow girl blues
I rock too fast for love
I’m footloose in my Velcro shoes
What’s up with Will and Grace?
I don’t get drum and bass
The future freaks me out

Electric Six - The Future is in the Future

Baby, you got to signal before you turn,
I think you’re heading for the disco burn
Cause the future is in the future,
And the past is a big brick wall,
You know I need to make you understand now,
I’m a man not a disco ball

yay, MC Frontalot! He's going to be at the documentary film festival here, giving a concert after a screening of a terrific documentary about him that is an exemplar of the band-on-tour genre. sadly, I'm double booked that night and will be taking a rare night away from the festivities that night.

more tomorrows? Squeak E. Clean's "Hello Tomorrow" (soundtrack to a cool Spike Jonze addidas commercial) & Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow".

Glad you enjoyed! I've loved Criswell since I was old enough to polish a crystal ball. He was before his time, he'd fit perfectly into the scene today. Don't forget, we're all interested in the future because it's where we're going to spend the rest of our lives.

To show where my mind is at, I thought the whole "I'm still waiting for my jet pack" was a Jetsons reference - I did not see that video coming. At all. But a good point of reference for this Heathen to use in THE FUTURE.

Sorry, I noticed this week that LiveJournal just made it so you can't use any html tags in Anonymous posts. What you need to do is post through OpenID, any web account can be used to utilize it, even an AIM ID. Here's the page: How do I get an OpenID?

Thanks for the BeBop Deluxe! You need to post one more of their tunes to even up with me ;-)
