walk on

I've always loved walking. The best part, one really gets a feel for their surroundings, rather than the carousel effect of watching the world through the window of a fast moving car, bus or train. I enjoy walking so much that I often try (unsuccessfully) to convert my fellow Southern Californians to leave the car behind and hoof it - this is a place where peeps will jump into their auto to drive two blocks to a fast food joint. Now, there's places humans shouldn't walk and I found that out during a Summer in the Nevada desert. I walked five miles in Las Vegas during the mid-day Sun, the temperature was 123 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) and I arrived to my destination with a mind warped more than usual. It was a hallucinatory experience, unfortunately, my feet sinking into the melting black asphalt road wasn't. Now, SoCal natives don't have that heat excuse - though I love the Southland, I really can't figure out the aversion to walking. It's certainly not due to ill-health, since it can often look like the set of Baywatch out here. The only thing I can come up with - it's not the most social of places, most residents just don't like talking to people they don't know and walking surely increases the chances of that occurring. Now, this is opposed to New York City, where the worst thing you could do is ask a native how they're doing, cause most tend to answer in great detail. For this reason, I suspect that's what makes it one of the greatest places in the United States to go walking - most New Yorkers enjoy interaction, contrary to the material of thousands of stand-up comedians over the years. The air's electrified and helps glide you along, I find it inspiring. Lower Manhattan, especially Greenwich Village, is one of my prime locations to go stepping out. I'd love to learn of some other choice spots to walk - if any come to mind, let me know in comments.

So, here's a collection of walking songs. My hope is you'll load them on your iPod, put on your walking shoes and take that first big step that leads to hundreds more. Your feet may hurt, but the music will soothe any pain silly enough to rear its head.

"The longest journey begins with a single step." - Lao Tsu

"All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." - Friedrich Nietzsche

"The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen out our days is to walk steadily and with a purpose." - Charles Dickens

"An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day." - Henry David Thoreau

"One step at a time is good walking" - Chinese Proverbs

"We must walk before we run." - George Borrow

"Walking is a man's best medicine." - Hippocrates

"The best remedy for a short temper is a long walk." - Jacqueline Schiff

"Don't threaten me with love, baby. Let's just go walking in the rain." - Billie Holiday

Great walking post - it is generous of you to always share so much good music.

I like walking in NYC and smiling at people. People simply don't know what to make of it. I love taking out-of-towners to the city - they get so intimidated by the endless crowds. One time my friend came to visit from Australia and she was afraid of the squirrels. I should plan some walking in the city - it's never boring - I dunno about people being friendly, though. Maybe the different parts of the city have their own character.

I love walking on beach boardwalks. Besides having a view of the ocean, the people are interesting, family resemblances are so cute, and you also get to check out the various bodies :)

I kinda went nuts with 25 tunes. But I have a kick-ass provider and bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, so I figured, what the hey...

Now, I said New Yorkers like to talk, I didn't say anything about smiling. Southern Californians will smile all day long, even give a cheery "hello!". But it all ends there, it's time to move along, you got your few seconds and now you're done. I agree, it's great to take the uninitiated around the Big Apple - you're likely to see something pretty amazing. It could be a street-corner card game, an impromptu park speech or someone talking a dump in public. New York, you gotta love it!

As you know, there's a boardwalk close by to me, but I'm a bit burnt out on that walk for now. Perhaps it's time for a visit to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park - that's a fantastic walk!

what the hey :)

oh I get it - yes, New Yorkers are mad. I haven't seen a public dump but a woman at work told me a story about sitting in a restaurant with a bunch of girls, by a window, and a guy came up and - how shall I say it - yanked his crank for them - and with the result frozen to the window they requested a change of table. What makes me smirk is that they stayed till he was done. Now that's a real NY story. Forgive me if it is too real :)

That park looks fantastic - especially the rock art - I wish I could go!

That's a great example of some of the amazing things you'll see in New York, great story!

Anza-Borrego can look like Mars in certain parts, definitely a place that grabs you, walks there can be illuminating.

Thanks to pointing me to that hilarious post! I love this part:
• groups of tourists/dumb beheadbanded williamsburgian sluts who walk quadruple-file down the street, arms linked, en force, like they're a fucking macedonian war phalanx. on west 34th, i give up and just walk in the bus lane instead, in the street, and take my chances. (i keep reminding myself to not do that when my dad is in town or else he will have a hernia.)

Mama don't let allow no jaywalking out here...

Golf is a good walk ruined according to Mark Twain but I don't golf so I might as well be walkin' on the sun unless I'm sleepwalking while I'm walking the dog. Nobody walks in L.A. but I hear a lot of folks are walkin' in Memphis, they go out walking after midnight - walking with a ghost. Thanks again for another great post but please tell me exactly what it means to walk on guilded splinters??

Great post, love to walk in the city. Anyway, my suggestions:
Patsy Cline- Walking After Midnight
Tegan and Sara - Walking with Ghosts
And 80's pop supreme, walking on sunshine with Katrina and the Waves- remember seeing her opening open for the Psychedelic Furs in a small bar in Montreal. It was a bad scene, beer bottles flying and some bad feelings. Anyway, she sang this song as a real F-you anthem. So for me I always remember this as a punk anthem.

nice post! Just found it while searching for the Jimmy McCracklin song on the web. I agree with much of what you said.
