ode to autumn

Yesterday, as a cool Autumn-like breeze blew across my face, I caught the first hint of Fall's arrival. It brought back a conversation from a few years back where I'd discussed how much I loved the season. My acquaintance replied that it was most likely due to the allegorical nature of Fall, it was time to reap the harvest of seeds we'd planted in our lives. I enjoyed her poetic take, it sure beats worrying about sweeping leaves. It's just about time to celebrate the coming of harvest, here's something to help the mood.

"For man, Autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad." - Edwin Way Teale

"Delicious Autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive Autumns." - George Eliot

"I prefer Winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of Winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show." - Andrew Wyeth

"My sorrow, when she's here with me, thinks these dark days of Autumn rain are beautiful as days can be; she loves the bare, the withered tree; she walks the sodden pasture lane." - Robert Frost

"The teeming Autumn big with rich increase, bearing the wanton burden of the prime like widowed wombs after their lords decease." - William Shakespeare

"But I remember more dearly Autumn afternoons in bottoms that lay intensely silent under old great trees." - C.S. Lewis

"Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile." - William Cullen Bryant

Mmmm, nice set. We don't really get much of autumn in the North East any more, just a couple weeks of mellow weather between summer and pseudo-winter. Ah, well.

Amused: I kind of expected you to post something about autumn and also that Neil Young and the Kinks would be in it. It also reminded me of the infamous Foetus Song in which he says" Today is the first of September ... I'll meet you in Poland baby" - which was about the Nazis invading Poland in the fall of 1939. Can't have been a nive autumn for the Polish!

I can think of nowhere else where I can enjoy the Kinks, Isleys, Captain Kirk and jackboot Nazi's all in one place except here. I am not ready to give in to Autumnal bliss - I for one am all about celebrating Indian Summer (Joe Walsh, Doors, Manic Street Preachers), where the sun never sets. Thanks for another stunning set Senor Snuh.

Glad you enjoyed it! It can get pretty diverse around here, expect some Tuvan Hip-Hop soon. I see no reason why one shouldn't pine for Summer and stretch it out every inch they can.

The whole poem is great:

To Autumn
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness!
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twinèd flowers;
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barrèd clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

I'm doing him a favor. The extra $10 in royalties would've gone to supporting his alcoholism - I'd hate being an enabler!

Van The Man Bans Booze At Gigs
- 18/09/2008
Van Morrison has imposed a ban on alcohol at venues on his forthcoming UK tour - he finds it "off-putting" when fans pop to the bar mid-set.

Concert promoter Danny Betesh has insisted the ban is not related to Morrison's past battle with alcohol addiction.

"We have had a policy of no drinks being taken into the hall because certain artists find it off-putting to have the audience moving around," said Betesh.

A spokesperson for the first venue of the tour, the Brighton Dome, told the Telegraph newspaper that the 67-year-old singer's request was "not hugely common".
