shedding the summer skin

In the US, the figurative summer starts on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day, which is this Monday. So, in a reflective mood, I've found myself contemplating what this Summer brought me and I can say "nothing and everything".

For some, the approach of Fall means it's time to return to the same old grind. For others, it's an occasion of renewal. One thing for sure - it's colder. Here's some tunes to help say goodbye to the Summer. Can you think of any I might have missed?

ah...that's a great list. so much familiar and beloved as well as unfamiliar and inviting.

"Last Rose of Summer" is a Thomas Moore poem set to music by a few folk, as well as kooky Tom Waits tune on The Black Rider.

They are so cheery. They must play them in the City of Brotherly Love, since they seem to tip so well.

20% has been city norm for years. And I carry cash to feed the coffee house workers. The evil of the store card (Starbucks, Cosi) is that you can't have it automate gratuities, so the coffee jacks get stiffed.

I tip a minimum of 20%, which in San Diego is double the norm - peeps are cheapskates out here.

Hey, my local shops and restaurants give me good service and my local coffee people know exactly how strong I need it just by looking at my glazed eyes, so they've earned a good tip. Hell, my regular place pretty much has my order waiting for me as I drag my sleepy arse to the counter, so they get plenty of love.

Now that the small mom & pop businesses are becoming a thing of the past, I rarely come across that sort of service.

This is a shop owned and run by genuine gay communists who proselytize their fair trade goods. Nice folks. Free wifi too. They are opening a branch in the middle of the corporate business district, which I'm going to have to check out to gauge their reception.

We have like 17 Starbucks within a 3 mile radius (some are so close to each other you can hit it with a stone). They drove every little coffee house ('cept 1) out of business. San Diego is the place Emma Goldman's road manager, Ben Reitman, was tar and feathered over pro-Union activities. It hasn't changed that much, in that sense. This is the place Costco was born, capital of strip malls. The few amount of funky shops were driven out by the real estate bubble.

There are still plenty of little eateries and whatnot. They figured out free wifi pretty quickly and became entrenched. Philly, while a corrupt labor town, had plenty of Mother Jones love back in the day. The IWW HQ is in the northern burbs.

With the price of everything going through the roof, I expect a return of the small mom & pops. There's going to be a return to centralized communities, that part of the future I'll enjoy.

There are lots of co-ops and farmer's markets in Philly. Short distribution lines from south Jersey and East PA. I kinda doubt that all the Mennonite farmers are genuine, given that they put their daughters on display to draw customers...

Summertime has done come and gone, my oh my. This wasn't a very Summery Summer for me, so I'm all for having it done with. Plus, I love the Fall, the cool fresh breezes.

From the look of your icon, you stole some of our palm trees - sent them back! How did you get them on the plane? ;-)

This was a weird summer for it... I worked my ass off for most of it... and travelled like crazy for August. It was actually pretty awesome ;)
Though, it rained for what seems like the entire summer in Toronto, so I'm glad I got away, otherwise it totally wouldn't have seemed like summer to me.

And... I'll never tell ;) hehe.

Last Summer was a nightmare, rightly closing with the Labor Day riots we had. After that, I was hoping for a boring Summer and I got it, so no complaints.

It costs $300 to bring a surfboard on a plane, I can't imagine what a palm tree would set you back!
