Good news for bandwidth suckers - I now have an unlimited transfer account for the mp3s, so leech away. Music lovers are welcome to insert URLs into their neato streaming players - if you can't beat 'em... Now that I no longer have to worry about transfer/storage, I can concentrate more on content. To celebrate, I've restored all the sound files for posts starting back from 7/22/07, along with a few other choice ones. If you have something you'd like me to update with working links, let me know.

Lord Melody: Carnival Proclamation

Chuck Berry: Let It Rock

Louis Jordan: Let The Good Times Roll

Badfinger: Come And Get It

It's been brought to my attention that I haven't been doing a good job of letting all you invisible friends know that I can also be found over at Star Maker Machine, a fine collective of music bloggers from across the Internets. Here's links to a few of my posts:

1984: Baby I'm A Star

1984: The Reflex

Boats: Shipbuilding

1984: Smooth Operator

There's been quite a rise in traffic this year (especially the last few weeks), thanks for taking to time to stop by, more fun ahead...web hit counter

Yay! Archive plundering! Er, I mean, good for you! ^_^

The rise in traffic surely has to do with your exponential growth of awesome. You are as the corn field, ye of many ears!

Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated! Last Fall something sorta clicked in my head and I found an approach that works. Add one part This American Life and Theme Time Radio and mix in me.

I have been mulling over writing a primer about file servers. I started out, as much of music blogging community has, with Dreamhost. They advertised offering more bandwidth than one would ever need, but as with most offers like that, they didn't really think someone would be using 60 Gigs of transfer a day, which equals about 12,200 downloads. It ends up the problem was web companies that offered online music libraries that could be played through their proprietary media players. The libraries were made up with URLs found through bots that comb the Net looking for mp3 files, many had found the files I put up for this blog. They make money from the ads plastered all over and every time someone listened to a song I hosted, I got whacked with the bandwidth expended for streaming. I don't mind folks downloading, but streaming was killing me. Dreamhost found an excuse to dump me and that started me down a path of some of the most inept web companies I've ever come across.

The first was minorcrisis.com, which hit you up for *donations* to keep the bandwidth meter from hitting empty. The next was fileden.com - their problem, every time a file is pinged, it counts as a full download. www.metadatalabs.com/mlbot is on this site every hour, pinging every file, over and over. It quickly became apparent that it wasn't feasible to continue using them, the owner was not available for discussion on this topic. Next comes the worst of the worst - MediaMax. They worked pretty well for a few months, but then they announced they were changing into TheLinkUp.com the first week of May. Once they became the new company, they literally ceased to work - you can read the bitchfest here.

I have my fingers crossed with this new host. I spent a while checking them out and so far, it's been almost too good to be true, it's amazing what they offer and for an incredibly low price. That's why I picked the Badfinger song: "if you want it, any time, I can give it, but you better hurry cause it may not last" - I'm an optimistic pessimist. I hope it works out, because I spent a chunk of time each week dealing with this bullshit.

~thumbs up~
And yeah...I've only had a little experience with a hosting service - years and years ago, when I twere but a wee pup - and...man. That's all I have to say. I think a primer of sorts would be a good thing for a lot of people, especially those in your position.
People who stream or hog your bandwidth drive me nuts. How much is it to save it to your own harddrive? Oy.

All in all though I'm glad things are working out alright.

For once in my life, I have no complaints. Let's see how long that lasts.

Hopefully for a very long time. Then again, complaints are merely a form of challenge =) a way of making ourselves right what we find ill in the world. Or, ah, in the internet, in your prior cases.
