erin go bragh!

This year, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 15th because the church decreed it couldn't fall during Holy Week. I didn't have time to get together a proper St. Patrick's Day post, but since last year's has been getting quite a few hits, I have a great excuse for a repost. Here's music from some of Ireland's finest bands, enjoy:

Van Morrison & Them
Van Morrison & Them: Baby Please Don't Go - 3.68MB

Van Morrison & Them: I Can Only Give You Everything - 4.24 MB

The Pogues
The Pogues: If I Should Fall From Grace With God - 2.15MB

The Pogues: Sally McLannan - 3.72MB

The Pogues: And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - 9.35MB

Thin Lizzy
Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak - 9.30MB

Thin Lizzy: Dancing In The Moonlight - 4.53MB

Thin Lizzy: Whiskey In The Jar - 5.43MB

Setting The Woods On Fire has a great St. Patrick's Day post up, check it out: Traditional Irish Music - The Dubliners, The Pogues, The Clancy Brothers, and more!.web hit counter

Three great groups. That Peel Session version of "whiskey in the jar" is better than the normal single, imho. nice.

The single version ended up on the CD repackage of Vagabonds of the Western World. Thin Lizzy has to be one of the underrated bands of all time, they had a twin guitar attack reminiscent of Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner's work with Lou Reed/Alice Cooper. I found this video over at Rock Town Hall, I never knew Phil Lynott had an one-off band of all-star musicians:

I always thought VM was at his best with Them. And I'm still shocked that Shane hasn't died yet. Or is he a zombie?

Morrison stretched out artistically after Them, I would say his time with Them was more focused. I wish I could find the pic of Shane with three dead tooth stumps that now make up his choppers. I really had assumed he was dead until I saw he was still half-alive.

Saw Shane with the Popes about 10 years ago. Opening band played, DJ comes on. DJ doesn't leave. After an hour people are getting a bit pissed. Turns out Shane is missing. The Popes come on, say they are gonna play a set, give refunds. As they are play, showered by thrown bottles, I notice off to the side a pair of heavies dragging in Shane. A new shirt is on him, you can still see the pins and folds from the packaging, as you never perform with a puke-covered shirt. He comes on and plays the full set and doesn't drop a lyric.

I hear many years later that he was only 2 bars down holding court and completely drenched in distilled and fermented glory when they found him. No surprise when I hear he's gone.

Great story! I think he's another Keith Richards, he must have extraterrestrial blood in him.

I have a similar story about Johnny Thunders. I was dating a gal that was a DJ at a local station and she was a huge NY Dolls fan, so she grabbed some tickets for us when Johnny was scheduled to come to town. The show was over two hours late, we talked to the promoter and was told that Thunders was in a bad way, he was heroin-sick and needed a fix so he could perform. A few phone calls and they acclimated Johnny and he slowly made his way to the stage. He performed solo acoustic and sat on a stool for about 30 minutes before he said goodnight. His last song was the apt, You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory, he was dead a few months later.

Eating with our infant son (who got cranky after we had been there maybe 20 minutes), we asked to get the soup and noodles in a container to go and were told that the kitchen wouldn’t allow it, since they could not ensure the quality of the food.

The problem, they say, is that most earmarks don't come with extra money from Washington. They merely dictate how agencies must spend federal money they were already counting on.

I wish we could have done something then and I wish we could do more now.
