Yes, it's time for another Halloween music collection. I enjoy these posts because I get a chance to draw upon my memory bank to come up with some tasty selections. Sorry, no Dead Man's Party, Monster Mash or Purple People Eater here. If you're looking for tunes along those lines, there's about one million music blogs that are posting those songs, just check with the Hype Machine or Elbows. Now, on with the festivities.
Cars, trucks, and roads are a big part of our supernatural mythology. There's the popular movie, Christine, about a car possessed by an evil entity. Then there's the old Urban Myth about picking up a hitchhiking Jesus. Dick Curless sang about a trucker counting off tombstones every mile and Jan Berry really never came back from Dead Man's Curve. Cake sings how Satan is their motor and after a crash, Dave Edmunds found bits of himself scattered on the trees and in the hedges.
Dick Curless liked to perform with an black eye patch, which made counting tombstones in Maine's Hangsville Woods more difficult than hitting those ultra-deep notes he was famous for.
Some of the worst nightmares I've ever experienced was finding myself chased by some horrible creature only to discover I was running in quicksand. Being chased by the Devil, hell hounds, monsters or ghosts can be quite scary - better pray for hard, fast ground!
It's been said that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads at midnight in exchange to play anything he wanted on guitar, so if anyone knew they had a hell hound on their trail, it be him.
What would Halloween be without black cats and coffins? Jeff Beck performs voodoo on guitar in this next selection.
The music ends with country legend Porter Wagoner warning about a river that's deep and wide. Here's hoping for Porter's recovery from lung cancer, I'm afraid it's not looking good as he was just transfered to a hospice.
Last Halloween I posted a couple of sound files of scary stories. Judging by the amount of downloads, they were pretty popular. Considering that I go through mp3 hosts like an undertaker does formaldehyde, here they are again.
Have a happy Halloween and make sure to take care of all the little ghouls and goblins that come to your door in seek of a treat - don't complain about getting egged if you don't!

Dick Curless: Tombstone Every Mile - 2.79MBJan Berry (of Jan & Dean) wrote about Dead Man's Curve, a dangerous stretch of road in Los Angeles. How ironic that shortly after, his career was effectively over as he drove his Corvette Stingray straight into a parked truck a stone's throw from the location he'd written about. Jan, a medical school student, suffered brain damage that he partially recovered from. He died 2004 at age 62.
Jan & Dean: Dead Man's Curve - 2.74MBDon't drive like a nut in the rain or your body parts will be spread by the roadside.
Dave Edmunds: Crawling From The Wreckage - 4.71MBGene Vincent raced the Devil doing 101 MPH - move, hotrod. Move, man.
Gene Vincent: Race With The Devil - 3.29MBSatan is the only one who seems to understand John McCrea - hear his motor purr.
Cake: Satan Is My Motor - 5.11MB

Robert Johnson: Hell Hound On My Trail - 4.18MBFrom Wikipedia - The song is about a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, fire-breathing cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the ghosts of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways he will be doomed to join them, forever "trying to catch the Devil's herd across the endless skies."
Vaughn Monroe and His Orchestra: (Ghost) Riders in the Sky - 2.74MBSpooks behind the trees and outside the windows - sounds like a job for Ghostbusters.
Lambert, Hendricks & Ross: Halloween Spooks - 4.07MBIf you're staying at Hotel Paradise, avoid the ghost of Stephen Foster.
Squirrel Nut Zippers: Ghost Of Stephen Foster - 4.87MBYou should be able to outrun a monster, right? They're so big and slow.
Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band: Look Out, There's A Monster Coming - 4.87MB
What would Halloween be without black cats and coffins? Jeff Beck performs voodoo on guitar in this next selection.
Beck, Bogert & Appice: Black Cat Moan - 15.00MBStay away from that demon alcohol, lest you end up driving coffin nails with the empty bottles.
Ernest Tubb: Drivin' Nails In My Coffin - 3.21MB
The music ends with country legend Porter Wagoner warning about a river that's deep and wide. Here's hoping for Porter's recovery from lung cancer, I'm afraid it's not looking good as he was just transfered to a hospice.
Porter Wagoner: Satan's River - 4.60MB
