get happy!

Most people are either back to work or school and vacation time is not on the horizon. While you're busy taking care of business, remember what Twin Peaks' Agent Cooper said - "Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee." Though you might be tied up with work or study, today's gift is make sure to enjoy yourself, even if it's just for a few minutes. Here's some music to help you accomplish that:

Judy Garland: Get Happy - 2.58MB

Prince Buster: Enjoy Yourself - 2.85MB

Al Weston & Irene Young: Okeh Laughing Song - 2.74MB

The Who: Happy Jack - 1.61MB

The Ramones: We're A Happy Family - 2.28MB

Al Green: Sha-La-La (Makes Me Happy) - 4.78MB

Shuggie Otis: Happy House - 1.75MB

The Beat Farmers: Happy Boy - 2.23MB

Sly & The Family Stone: (You Caught Me) Smilin' - 4.04MB

The Edwin Hawkins Singers: Oh Happy Day - 8.22MB

Altered Images: I Could Be Happy - 5.58MB

Stinky Weaselteats: Happy Happy Joy Joy - 1.60MB

I used to be friends with the Beat Farmers, I spent a lost weekend with them in Vegas during the 90s that I'll never forget. I was also buddies with the song's author, Jeff Becker, who's an amazing guitarist. After Country Dick died, it was pretty much over for the Farmers, though the band still plows on. Here's a great 1994 version of Happy Boy from KBCO studios:

The Beat Farmers: Happy Boy (live) - 1.58MB

Fun! He has that long haired British charm :)

Nutted By Reality starts out sounding like an old Michael Jackson song (girl i want you back) in fact a few times in different songs of his I thought I heard melodies from other songs. The rest of the song musically feels like mismatched parts. The message is garbled - did he say something about Castro coming down from a tree? Odd. Maybe it's post modern and meant to be more like Jackson Pollock and DeKooning paintings mashed together, all cacaphonous.

I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll was more consistent and a nice ride. Again it sounded like another song - I am not so good at naming songs - if I remember it I will tell you - all I have is a segment of the melody in my head. It makes good use of his boyish charm. I give it a 7 1/2, easy to dance to :)

Let's Eat - Oh I like this one - it has Green Day guitar. Or maybe Ramones - yeah definitely Ramones. I love the Ramones too. Let's eat - he wants to chew? What was he thinking? hahahaha I like this one the best but I can't get on board with the let's eat chew chew chew. If the music is slicing and dicing, the message has to be more biting. heh biting.

He's interesting and I like him.

Nutted By Reality starts out sounding like an old Michael Jackson song (girl i want you back) in fact a few times in different songs of his I thought I heard melodies from other songs.

Nick used to play with Brinsley Schwarz. After they broke up, Brinsley played with Graham Parker, who recorded a great version of I Want You Back. Lowe never made it a secret that he borrows from other songs, he makes it so obvious that to accuse him of of stealing is redundant.

The message is garbled - did he say something about Castro coming down from a tree?

The best part of his songs are the lyrics. Here's Nutted By Reality:

Well, I heard they castrated Castro, I heard they cut off everything he had. What a dirty, lowdown thing to do to mess him up like that. They dumped him in the jungle, in the land of the sugarcane. Ever since that day they flayed around say it aint never been the same. I say, oh, la - I say oh la. I say, oh, la.

Well, I heard they castrated Castro, because he was the people's friend. They told him once and they told him twice said aint gonna tell you again. They put a bit of pressure on him, that's when he told them what they could do. So the word came down from a noisy town set up a jungle rendezvous. I say, oh, la - I say oh la. We say oh la.

He had been living in a different world, then he was nutted by reality. He had been living in another tree and he flew down to see what happened.

I went out to see my sister, she was not in, so I went and bought a paper and then I returned. She was well into her racing, on the tv. She has never been that fond of me, I went to turn her over.

See, I've been living in a different world and then I was nutted by reality. I had been living in another tree and I flew down to see what happened.

I was listening to an echo, I was impressed. Even though I couldn't see it, it was the most. I was a jumping and gleeing at everyone. I was speaking in a foreign tongue but yet I gained no pleasure.

See, I've been living in a different world and then I was nutted by reality. I had been barking up another tree and I flew down to see what happened.

Maybe it's post modern and meant to be more like Jackson Pollock and DeKooning paintings mashed together, all cacaphonous.

Hmmm. I feel he's uncommonly melodic, much like Paul McCartney.

I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll was more consistent and a nice ride

This version was from his first attempt at leading a band. It was recorded during a 1977 tour of Stiff Record artists. Both Nick and Dave Edmunds have done endless versions of this song, but I feel this one is the best.

Let's Eat - Oh I like this one - it has Green Day guitar.

Maybe Green Day learned about Pure Pop For Now People from Nick.

He's interesting and I like him.

He the most famous musical artist no one has ever heard of. He also wrote (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding.

Nutted By Reality

That is a really funny song. It's stuffed full of existential wackiness. Maybe we all get nutted one way or another. Yes - Paul McCartney quality - that's exactly it.

At first it seemed the parts of the song didn't go together - but on second listening they do and I like it a great deal more. Nutted by reality is such an odd concept. I had to get past the initial oddness of it.

Green Day learned from Nick.

Whoopsy, I got it backwards.

He has so many albums, is still very active, and he's "the headmaster of British rock." :)

As the story linked says, he used to be married to Carlene Carter, June Carter Cash's daughter and Johnny's step-daughter. What I remember about her most was her claim that she "put the cunt back in country music". She left him for another bass player, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Howie Epstein, who died in 2003.

Here's one from Nick's Rockpile days. Back in the 80s, this one actually charted:

Rockpile: Teacher Teacher - 2.75MB

Teacher Teacher - it reminds me of another song - Cars, Just What I Needed. I dunno why my mind wants to match up songs. It seems to me he was a huge influence on people. I like the song and how it rolls forward :)

"Daddy Carl was one of country music's original cool cats—a swaggering, honky-tonkin' bad-ass"

I like the sound of that.

Cruel to Be Kind
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EbRyfr8iEJc

On the evidence of this album, Lowe, the incorrigible codger, still greets the advancing decades with a wry turn of phrase, a swing in his step and an offer to rock and roll. Nods to stars of soul and country glitter through the album like jewelled fragments in a magpie’s nest, from the covers of Charlie Feather’s ‘’The Man In Love’’, the Uniques’ ‘’Not Too Long Ago’’ and album-closer Faron Young’s ‘’Feel Again’’ to the melodic quotes and vocal stylings recalling everyone from Floyd Cramer and Nina Simone to Dean Martin and Roy Orbison.

"the incorrigible codger" uses "a lot of melodic quotes." Ha! I knew it. :)

This is true. One of their duets was featured in the Johnny Cash movie, here it is, truly a delightful song (mix that batter, baby):

A cake's no good if you don't mix the batter and bake it

mmmmmmm cake :)

Zulu Kissing may be why his marriage failed. I'm no expert but he may have been Zulu kissing when he should have been mixing the batter. Carlene the CUNTry girl probably didn't have patience for that kind of silliness and reacted with yet another round of her famous cruel kindness. Zulu Kiss led me to Infinite eargasm

He is great and I'm glad you introduced me to him - he's an offbeat funny guy. I hope someone else asks me about Nick Lowe and I'll be all like "oh yeah Zulu kiss and Nutted By Reality" and they'll be all like "Oh my god you are so hip and schooled in rock and roll" and I'll be all like "let's bake a cake!" hahaha never mind :)

Let's Eat! This was good, it helped me flesh out the upcoming Nick Lowe post. I think you have to be careful to not deluge people with too much, I have to find a way to make it concise while I'm inclined to write every little detail.
