the things you learn on the net
I'm in the middle of listening to Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour (TTRH) series that was broadcast on XM satellite radio and currently available via torrent. There's smaller downloads available, but I decided to go for the whole enchilada and grab all fifty hours, which is a whopping 3.65GBs in size - it took over two days, but well worth it. If you have torrent and are interested, it's available here.

At the beginning of the Father's Day show, Bob played the Horace Silver Quintet's "Song For My Father", which he pointed out Steely Dan had borrowed from in "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". Here's the two so you can make your own comparison:

Horace Silver Quintet: Song For My Father - 11.6MB

Steely Dan: Rikki Don't Lose That Number - 10.9MB

Now, Bob isn't too proud to borrow himself, as you can hear when he offered up Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell's "Papa's On The Housetop", which is very reminiscent to "Tombstone Blues" - give them a listen:

Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell: Papa's On The Housetop - 4.00MB

Mama's in the kitchen, messing all around. Papa's on the housetop, won't come down.

Bob Dylan: Tombstone Blues - 10.9MB

Mama's in the factory, she ain't got no shoes. Daddy's in the alley, he's looking for food.

It's fun finding the genealogy of popular songs. This seems to becoming a bit of a project for me, so more soon to come. In the meantime, try and check out Theme Time Radio Hour.web hit counter

Thanks. Because of the net, it's now incredibly easy to find out-of-print songs that once were impossible to find. It's a virtual treasure trove of classic songs.

And my hard drive is fairly groaning at the prospect!

Tell me! I have a 100 gig HD that's dedicated to media and even though I recently spent hours cleaning out what wasn't necessary, it's back to being halfway full.

I'm going to burn Theme Time Radio Hour to disk after I listen to all of it and look into getting a 200 gig drive. It's a good thing HDs are so cheap nowadays, imagine how much it would cost five years ago.
