conspicuous by my absence

DreamHost, my domain provider, noticed I was averaging over 60 gigabytes of mp3 transfers a day. For you non-techies, let's just say that's a tremendous amount. So, DreamHost disabled my sound files - can't say that I blame them. The problem was online music providers that found my sound index page and leeched my bandwidth. So, no more index page, you'll have to download the music right here, which is the way it should be. The next few days, I'll be reuploading and editing my older entries, so please be patient. I couldn't possibly upload 500-odd songs, so I'll be starting when I hooked up with the HypeMachine. If you see something from before that time that you'd like to download, just make a request in comments and I'll be happy to oblige. To the people visiting here from Locust St, the music in the something borrowed, something blue post I linked in comments should be back up in a few.

This set goes out to online music providers; dizzler, myplaylist, musicplaylist, greatprofilemusic, profilelist, emp3world, seeqpod, mp3asset (among others) - leechers suck, especially when they're making money off my bandwidth.

Phil Ochs: You're All Full Of Shit - 5.43MB (Last Ochs performance - NWS)

Eve 6: Leech - 7.28MB

Incubus: Leech - 7.91MB

I *adore* Phil Ochs, but he definitely sounds like a suicidal alcoholic in that recording.

Well, you obviously know what happened after that performance - sad. Here's something more pleasant to remember him by:

Phil Ochs: I'm Not Marching Anymore - 628KB

Phil Ochs: Hills Of West Virginia - 5.10MB

Oh, I am sure if you had horrid taste in music those sites would leach. Someone has to seed Jock Jams vol.8 after all.

Dean--

Sorry to hear about this, man. I contend with a bunch of these kind of jerks all the time, and if one leaves you alone, 10 more crop up overnight.

what can you do? I always wonder why people sweep in, download 30 tracks of primarly old, weird music, and head out, but who knows.

yrs,
chris

I'm a stats freak and I would see all this tremendous bandwidth use. I'd trace it back and find they were playing through online streaming players - why not do like the HypeMachine? They download it once and store it on their servers. Then, the worst part is seeing it grow exponentially, as you write. It's like Kudzu, it spreads by the minute.

what can you do?

I hope MinorCrisis is the answer. They offer hotlinking with no index pages, it looks like it was created for music bloggers. So far, so good, but they're not clear if they cap bandwidth for the paid users (they have a free service as well). They make it seem you pay for downloads more than the length of service, that part is vague and they haven't returned my emails questioning it.

I always wonder why people sweep in, download 30 tracks of primarly old, weird music, and head out, but who knows.

I'm looking forward to getting a true reaction from people what's popular.

That's when I knew I was in trouble, when I saw straight numbers for the downloads. I highly doubt people are equally interested in Rod Stewart, Architecture in Helsinki, Reggae and Punk, to the point whole slews of music had 1001 downloads for each song. In the stats, I came across a bot at work - apparently, you set it loose to the public music file and download it all, en masse.

Thanks again for stopping by, Chris, it means a lot. You're the master of music blogging.

Boo leechers!! :(

The idea is to spread some music history around along with fun. I'm pissed off that these companies get advertising revenue while they take the music out of context and on my dollar. I hope people hear something they like and go out and buy the CD, like [info]kin_of_sin did after I posted a Morphine song.

Cool songs though LOL, I haven't heard Eve 6 in ages!

Eve 6 is already an oldies act? Geez, now I'm feeling even older!

Haha... well. Not quite oldies. It just reminded me of rocking out to them in high school. I hope that doesn't make me old!

They arrived a bit too late to be considered alternative. Maybe they can do a tour with Fastball and Third Eye. Remember what Ferris Bueller said: FerrisBullerlife.wav

And... if Eve 6, Fastball and Third Eye Blind were to tour... I'd totally go. :D

All those guys must have some miles on them, by now. Stephan Jenkins really blew it with Charlize Theron. Has VH1 done a Reeling In The 90s show yet?
