summertime, summertime

North of the equator, we're about to begin summer. I realized it was just about here after attending a Padres baseball game this week (they beat the dreaded Dodgers, always a treat). Even though this is a post about the imminent return of summer, San Diego's coast has been hit with what the locals call "May Gray" and "June Gloom". It's caused by a weather condition called a Catalina Eddy. At the coast, we've been socked in with clouds, but I'm not going to let that dampen celebrating the sun.

When I was a kid in New York City, a sure sign the summer was about to start was when the local top forty radio station, WABC (now all news), played the Jamies paean to the season. Hat tip to Locust St for the find.

The Jamies: Summertime, Summertime - 1.84MB

The Beach Boys weren't really a surf band, but a vocal group in the tradition of The Four Freshmen (picture a bunch of guys in matching sweaters). Those Beach Boy harmonies would glisten like the sun beating down on a blue flake 1964 Corvette Stingray.

The Beach Boys: The Warmth Of The Sun - 6.50MB

Who doesn't like Weezer? I believe they're one of [info]yallabaxna's favorite bands.

Weezer: Island In The Sun - 3.06MB

Here's an interesting personal fact - I attended the same high school as Frank Zappa (not simultaneously, of course). We even shared the same music teacher, Rey Vinole. Mr. Vinole did not like rock music and would even lecture on its evils, so we also shared Vinole's distaste.

Frank Zappa: Village Of The Sun - 7.85

[info]shirleebee turned me on to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. That's why I love all my LiveJournal flist'ers.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: As Sure As The Sun - 13.60MB

Pharcyde mixes Sublime.
Pharcyde & Sublime: Summertime In The LBC (Remix) -5.31MB

I picked this up from WFMU, the home of all things arcane.
Ella Fitzgerald: Sunshine Of Your Love - 4.43MB

A saucer full of Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd: Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun - 9.82MB

Here's hoping for a great summer - laissez les bons temps rouler!web hit counter

Nice post. Philadelphia had its first heat advisory of the year friday, so I spent the day in the park with an infinite amount of iced tea. So much for ambition, no?

It was 95F with 80 percent humidity, which is normally late July weather. Dropped back into the 80s, which is closer to normal.

It's 61 degrees, Fahrenheit, here. Maybe our cities can split the difference.

Thanks for letting me know about this and tell me when you post some more. I have an Egyptian themed song on Mixposure at the moment - I'm going to post it here now (it's been on Mix since April and I forgot to put it here.

Luve me some weeze, although that song was used over and over and over again in one of the Olsen Twin movies and so it has a wierd memory for me now. I know, that's what i get for watching an Olsen movie.
I'm glad you posted that BRMC song because I hadn't heard their music yet, but people have been talking about them, they are really good.
Great Etta James song, too!!

I've never watched any Olsen movie, but then, I don't have kids. I'm sorry to see they abused the Weezer song.

BRMC has a lot of good tunes, check out the Hype Machine, they have a lot listed for them.

Believe it or not, the Ella Fitzgerald song was the second most downloaded one of the bunch, and I posted it mostly as a joke.

Laissez les bons temps rouler?

See, you're supposed to correct me before I have 3,000 hits, many of them from France and Quebec. ;-)

Thank god for the edit feature!

I love mid-period Floyd, when they were stretching out. I also love Careful With That Axe, Eugene and One of these Days I'm Going to Cut You into Little Pieces. Things are a bit hectic on the personal front, I hope I'm able to stay sane.

The school Jazz band won a few Stan Kenton high school music competitions and also had James Zollar and Brad Cummings as members during my time there, but they considered him a hindrance, not a help, so not too much.

Great blogwork - thanks!

Thank you! I love to spread the music and knowledge.

Wow, not sure if you were paying attention in your class, but Rey Vinole had one of the first rock bands in San Diego. He wasn't against rock music, just the bands that were bad and making you aware. His music program was award winning from 1976 to 2000. How many high school bands do you know of that would get paid for there gigs instead of having to sell candy bars. I've met James Zollar in New York, he's told me "Mr. Vinole was pinnacle in my music development." Hardly a hindrance or unhelpful.

Rey hated all amplified music, period. He went into great detail how the rock bands didn't care about their audiences because they put PA speakers in front of the band, not behind them, which showed an inherent lack of knowledge about sound reinforcement. He went on how he didn't like Frank Zappa, yet would have the school Jazz band play Peaches En Regalia. The fact the band won many competitions gives you an idea how weak west coast music programs were in that era. James got less heat because he worked in the Jazz idiom - do you really think he'd badmouth someone he'd recognized as a friend of Rey Vinole? If he was such a good teacher, how come Warren DeMartini never donated any of the big money he made playing for Ratt?
