the iggster on turning 60
From Wizbang Pop:

Age has really caught up to Iggy Pop. The punk rocker, who turns 60 in April, tells Spin: "To feel good when I was 21, all I had to do was to smoke a joint. Now I have to turn off my phones, do tai chi for an hour, drink a strong cup of coffee and stay away from bad people, so I can feel good for an hour or two - knowing [that] when it ends, I'm gonna feel like the miserable 59-year-old fuck that I actually am."

Here's a clip of Iggy with Tom Waits in Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes. Jarmusch's films are mostly atmospheric, not plot heavy, so it may seem a bit meandering, which is part of its beauty:

Didn't you tell me you don't like Jim Jarmusch?

Not as a straight ahead director. Seeing his films are like hanging out with a friend. I enjoyed Night on Earth, Down By Law, and Stranger Than Paradise quite a bit. Mystery Train would be in my personal top twenty, but his movies aren't standard fare.

Was that a good enough dance around?

Love that quote. I guess it gets harder to feel good as you get older. I like Sister Midnight. It's funky. *grin*

The way Dick Clark used to be America's perennial teenager, I feel Iggy's America's perennial punk. The man hardly ages and still puts on a wild show. I met him once, while he waited to go on stage. I was struck on how short he is.

On Sister Midnight, he's imitating Jim Morrison while channeling through David Bowie.

Peter Green, the late Jim Morrison, the late Sid Vicious, Michael Jackson, Axl Rose, Jim Gordon, Roky Erickson, Alexander "Skip" Spence, the late G.G. Allin and the late Ian Curtis were mentally ill. I hesitate to use the word "crazy" because of its negative connotations. They are/were troubled people that didn't get the help they needed.

Sun Ra, Miles Davis and Lee "Scratch" Perry are anything but crazy. Miles Davis? Damb.

Iggy has his own ways. He pushes the envelope, but I don't consider him crazy. He's totally functional.

It's all in how you define crazy. It is not uncommon for individuals to judge people as crazy simply for varying from the norm and defying convention. It's also a matter of degree. Crazy is sometimes what people call creative people when they follow their inner voice. This link on the other hand is just exploitation and the music world equivalent to "Entertaiment Tonight" and that genre of crap. But still, it's a lot of information in one place :)

A great book to read: Miles: The Autobiography of Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe. Believe it or not, someone posted the whole book online: http://yanko.lib.ru/books/bio/miles.htm
